When a woman is pregnant, she is always aware of the growing baby in her womb, and she thinks of her child and her husband as a “gift from God.” In modern times, childbirth is not something that a woman experiences for the first time, but rather, she has gone through it many times and understands it well. Yet, she does not necessarily think of her own body as an "instrument" in the delivery of her child. This is something that was not common knowledge in the past. Early women were not aware of the natural processes that were taking place in their bodies when they were pregnant, and therefore, there were no means of knowing if the birth process would be successful. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was the expectation of women to give birth in a hospital, under a doctor’s supervision. Women were not considered competent to give birth without assistance, and thus there was no expectation that women could give birth without an assisted delivery. During pregnancy, a woman’s primary role was to prepare herself physically to give birth. As a matter of fact, the word “pregnant” was not used to describe a woman until the late 1800s. Before this time, the term “with child” was used, and women were considered to be “with child” if they were in the early stages of pregnancy. This is how it was until the early 1900s when women received the recognition that they should be the “producers” of life. During the Great Depression, the number of babies born was down because of a lack of financial resources. As a result, this also affected the rates of infant mortality. In the years from 1930 to 1940, hospitals were not permitted to send women home with “normal” babies, and they were forced to continue to give birth in the hospitals. Women were not considered “pregnant” until they were actually physically showing signs of a “dilated” cervix. This was the first step of labor that women had to go through before the delivery process could begin. In the United States today, women are able to give birth at home when they choose to. However, the increase in the infant mortality rate in the 1920s and 1930s has been due to the fact that women were not even considered capable of giving birth until their pregnancies were actually detected. In the past, women simply prayed for a safe birth and that God would
